Colorado to New Mexico

Day 16

White Sands National Park
Desert and You twins
02/05/2024
Before leaving Roswell this morning we decided to visit the Roswell Art Gallery. Another superb gallery which had a feature on a group of artists who taught at Dartington. Small world.

A strange trip today, about a two and a half hour drive. The first half was in high desert. It was strange to see mail boxes at the end of drives but no idea where the house was. The drives just go off into the landscape, which was very flat. Lots of cows but that was about all. However, the second half was wonderful, driving through what felt like alpine meadows. Lots of tree and we were about 6,000 feet above sea level. Obviously a ski area but with hardly anyone in it at present. The image was taken as we were coming down out of the mountains. We thought we were above the clouds but it was in fact White Sands National Park, maybe visit tomorrow.

We eventually arrived in Almagordo, which mainly consists of a long strip. Today we are staying at a traditional American motel for some rest and recuperation for three days. Only the White Sands and the Pistachio farm are on our itinerary at present. This is the furthest south we intend to travel. It is all back north from here so we will enjoy a bit of heat for a few days.
