Colorado to New Mexico

Day 18

White Sands National Park
White Sands
04/05/2024
I managed to watch an RPS Zoom this morning on flower and garden photography. Picked up one or two things. Geoff has got his own back as he is watching qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix as we speak.

So, set out a bit later today, heading for White Sands National Park. It is the place where the US airforce try out rockets and stuff. Apparently the first atomic bomb was tested there. Unfortunately they appear to have a plane crashed there on Tuesday so the park was closed. We managed to get in to the first stop. We had to climb the dunes to be able to get a vista of the sands. The sands are formed from Gypsum and it is like walking on cornflour, Amazing. Sands as far as you can see. A fabulous place. Lots of disappointed families who were hoping to sled down the bigger dunes. People with plastic dustbin lid shaped sleds. We even saw people with canoes. We did find a board saying that there were burrowing owls there (my favourites) but we did not see any. We may go back tonight as it is a recognised dark sky area.

Moving on tomorrow. Starting to head back north back to Denver - 9 more nights.
